Guidelines to maximizing the value from your coaching sessions

Introduction:

Starting coaching is an investment in your personal and professional growth. Often however, individuals may show up to a coaching session expecting the coach to provide all the value. To truly get the most out of each session, preparation and engagement from the coachee are essentail. Here are some practical guidelines to help you maximize your coaching experience through a simple to remember G.R.O.W. model:

G - Goal Setting
Define what you want to achieve.

  • Before each session, identify 1-2 goals.

  • Keep goals specific—this focuses the conversation and helps your coach provide targeted support.

R - Reflect and Review
Look back at your progress.

  • Take time to reflect on what’s working and where you’re facing challenges.

  • Bring any insights, roadblocks, or questions to your session to keep the conversation relevant and insightful.

  • Always ensure you create time after coaching sessions and between coaching sessions to reflect on the coaching sessions themselves to see what insights or further actions you can take away to learn from or progress.

O - Open Up and Engage
Be honest, listen actively, and stay open to feedback.

  • Share openly about your strengths, challenges, and areas where you need help.

  • Stay fully present, listen closely, and ask follow-up questions to deepen your understanding.

W - Work on Action Steps
Take concrete steps between sessions.

  • Commit to any action items or “homework” your coach helps you identify.

  • Schedule time in your calendar to work on these tasks and reflections as mentioned before —they’re where real growth happens.

Summary:
Through the use of this simple model you can be sure to maximize the value of your coaching sessions and see meaningful impact on your goals.
